In modern-day rhetoric, you will often hear the phrase "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." The original quote is from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, and it states “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown." King Henry says this when he is tired, sick, guilty for having seized the throne, and is threatened by rebellions. Being King, a leader or one of influence can be an anxiety-driven responsibility.
Let's relate this statement to modern-day activities and different roles of life. Take for instance the company CEO who has to fire 20% of their company to stay in business. On the other hand, 80% of the employees will keep their jobs. He or she is 'The One' and the only one that will receive the inevitable criticism for letting people go in such an unsettling time in the economy. That leader's head is heavy or uneasy while wearing that crown. When you are 'The One,' you are the constant gambler because you have to make the decision. Some decisions carry more weight than others, but all responsibility, criticism, and praise comes down to you. The leader is a fundamental and necessary figure who must establish constant growth and steer change. Ever see a school without a principal? Ever see a city without a Mayor? Ever see a church without a pastor/priest? The answer is no. Without 'The One,' there is no movement.
Now, let's take a look at a football team. Who gets all the praise and criticism, and often during the same game? You guessed it, the quarterback. It is a huge responsibility to influence others, play at your very best, and oh, be the leader of the team. How many times have you screamed during the game because the quarterback threw an interception? Often, you don't even know if the interception was the quarterback’s fault. What if the wide receiver ran the wrong route or the offensive lineman didn’t block well enough which forced the quarterback to hurry the throw. Fans, coaches, teammates, and analyst all jump on the quarterback. What was he doing, what was he thinking, and what did he see are a few of the typical responses imposed to 'The One.' Being 'The One' is often a very unrewarding and unfair position, yet the most needed and required position of value for growth and change. Have you ever seen a football team without a quarterback? You can't even call it football without the quarterback position. Again, without 'The One,' there is no movement.
Why are there very few owners and millions of employees? Shakespeare was right, "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown." Being 'The One' requires responsibility, accountability, vulnerability, humility, and all sorts of -ilities of one's actions! I've come to know that many are not open to wearing the crown, but for whom that chooses to do so, the reward is even greater. Having the courage to do what others will not do is an anointment and verification of your natural gifts and talents. Being 'The One' comes in many forms, but it requires much strength. We all at some point in our life have been told to do great. Not many of us have been told to 'Be The One.' 'Be The One' that can make the ultimate decisions. 'Be The One' whom others must look to for a vision. 'Be The One' who sacrifices emotions for actions. 'Be The One' who above all stands firm in his or her decisions despite the response from the court of public opinion. 'Be The One' who unwaveringly believes in thine self and who thinks that extraordinary greatness is attainable. BE THE ONE, for without you there is no constant growth and positive change!
