Maria C. Chicuen

MOTIVATION  for Teens from an Amazing Teen

Maria Cristina Chicuen is a high school senior at Felix Varela Senior High School in Miami, Florida. Maria was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to the United States in 2002. As a member of the iPrep and Global Studies Academies at her school, Maria has tackled a rigorous course load that includes several AP classes. However, Maria still finds the time to play on the varsity volleyball team and fulfill her duties as President of the Spanish Honor Society.

In early January 2012, Maria founded High School for Heroes (HS4H), an organization inspired by the 2011 CNN Heroes. HS4H engages Miami-Dade students in CNN Heroes' projects to fulfill two main guiding purposes: 1) assisting global communities in need and 2) increasing teenagers' awareness of current events as well as problems that require fresh solutions and collective effort. Combining her passion for journalism and international relations, Maria hopes to start her own non-profit in the future to drive innovative conflict resolution efforts at a global scale. Last but not least, Maria's passion for sports takes her beyond the volleyball court, as she is the #1 fan of the Miami Heat.
